Xavier Suarez, the first Cuban-born mayor of Miami and the father of the city’s current mayor, announced he is running for the office again this November.
He filed his paperwork to do so on Tuesday, and spoke to NBC6 about his campaign.
Suarez was first elected in 1985, reelected for a two-year term in 1987 and then elected again to a four-year term in 1989.
He said the city needs him, and that he could do a very good job and finish pending projects that include the Miami Marine Stadium and Coconut Grove Playhouse.
He also said he believes the city needs some form of real estate tax reform.
His son, Francis Suarez, is the current City of Miami Mayor and is term-limited.
While the older Suarez said his son has done an amazing job, calling him the most incredible marketing person, the former mayor also acknowledged that his own style is different, calling himself a micromanager.
