At the joint press conference following the meeting, the two leaders both said they made progress toward bringing the Ukraine-Russia war to an end. Starmer called the visit with Trump “very productive” and said they discussed a plan for peace “that is tough and fair.”
“It can't be peace that rewards the aggressor or that gives encouragement to regimes like Iran,” Starmer said. “We agree history must be on the side of the peacemaker, not the invader. So the stakes, they couldn't be higher. And we're determined to work together to deliver a good deal.”
The meeting, which took place just a day before Trump is set to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy who he called a “dictator” last week when he also inaccurately blamed Ukraine for starting the war with Russia. The comments are a marked departure from the previous three years in which the U.S. was one of Ukraine’s staunchest supporters in its fight against Russia. The meeting also comes days after French President Emmanuel Macron visited the White House to make the same case for Ukrainian support.
