BVI a step closer to solar power mandate with Anegada's renewable energy project

The British Virgin Islands government is a step closer to its 60 percent mandate for renewable sources of energy in five years.

On Tuesday, Minister for Communications and Works Kye Rymer led a team on a tour of the Anegada Renewable Energy Project, calling it a milestone for residents as the BVI government works toward supporting renewable energy.

“It’s the mandate of this government that we go 60% renewable energy and we’ve set a target date of 2030,” said Rymer, adding that “we are here in Anegada celebrating that there’s no generator working.”

“All the running [of power] for the homes is done through renewable energy,” Rymer said.

The plant, built in partnership with BVI Electricity Corporation, has not yet been commissioned and Rymer said that Tuesday’s trip was simply to highlight how far the renewable energy project has come.
