Cops slow to respond to mass shooting in Pan Am Pavilion; 2 shooters, 1 dead, 5 injured

CHRISTIANSTED — A shooting incident in the Pan Am Pavilion left one man dead and five others injured just after midnight Saturday.

The ShotSpotter system was alerted to gunshots fired by two shooters at 12:27 a.m., according to the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA). Michael Edwards, 35, was identified by a family member as the homicide victim. Edwards was observed lying on the ground unresponsive in the courtyard of the Pan Am Pavilion. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency medical technicians, St. Croix Rescue said. The others injured in the shooting included two men and three women. The fatal shooting was triggered by a robbery attempt that led to a physical struggle and then the gunfire, eyewitnesses said.
