Lt. Gov. Tregenza A. Roach announced Monday that boats damaged during storms in the Virgin Islands, including those prominently visible along the Charlotte Amalie waterfront, will finally be removed.
At least three boats damaged during Tropical Storm Ernesto in September have been an eyesore to both motorists and passersby in the vicinity of the V.I. Legislature. Joggers and walkers have complained for months of the stench emanating from the area where one of the boats came to rest across from the Alexander Farrelly Justice Complex. Reports are that local divers had so far refused to haul it away because of sewage seeping in the area.
“DPNR is working with the V.I. Waste Management Authority to improve water quality along the waterfront promenade, ensuring safe removal of the vessels,” Roach said. The lieutenant governor, who led Monday’s press briefing from Government House on St. Thomas, announced the removal of derelict vessels caused by Ernesto, but when reached by The Daily News said there were other areas with boats that were damaged during other storms that would also be cleaned up.
