US investigates gold smuggling links between Colombia, Venezuela, and Guyana

The United States is actively probing a gold smuggling operation that threads through Colombia, Venezuela, and Guyana, highlighting the complex nature of transnational crime and its implications on international relations.

Political shifts and investigative challenges

Investigations began under Guyana’s previous administration led by the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC).

However, Raphael Trotman, the former Minister of Natural Resources, indicated that these efforts were disrupted by political changes. Following the PPP’s return to power in 2020, local initiatives by the APNU+AFC coalition to combat gold smuggling were abruptly halted.

Trotman disclosed that a particularly secretive intelligence-led operation, nicknamed for its unique focus, was shut down within five days of the new administration’s inception.

The scope and impact of the smuggling operation

The US Department of Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control recently highlighted the significant economic impact of these smuggling activities.
