Over $8 million allocated for food security program

In a significant announcement on Sunday, Agriculture Secretary Ramón González Beiró revealed the allocation of $8.2 million for the Local Food Acquisition Program (LFPA), a move that is expected to make a significant impact on the island.

The new investment represents a record-breaking boost. With it, the total funds allocated to the program have reached an all-time high of $26.4 million, a testament to the program’s growth and potential to strengthen food security in Puerto Rico, the agriculture secretary said.  The resources are not just a financial boost, but a lifeline for many, González Beiró said, as they will significantly expand the reach of initiatives that benefit disadvantaged populations, a key focus of the program, and are channeled through non-profit organizations.

“With this allocation, we reaffirm our commitment to strengthen local agriculture and ensure access to nutritious food for those who need it most,” the official said. “It is essential to continue working to boost all agricultural sectors, ensure sustained growth, and increase the supply of local food for the people.”  Information on the application process for interested entities will be provided soon, González Beiró added.  The Agriculture Department also approved more than $2.5 million to purchase fresh local produce for school cafeterias as part of the program. Additionally, $902,083 was allocated for the purchase of food for child and senior care centers under the Child and Adult Food Supply Program (LFSCC).
