Some Eulalie Rivera students sent home because of ongoing classroom maintenance

Just one day after students returned to classrooms, the V.I. Education Department announced changes to the Eulalie Rivera school schedule to accommodate overdue maintenance.

Starting today, sixth-grade students in Ms. K. Plaskett’s class, as well as her kindergarten class, “will receive asynchronous home instruction,” according to the press release issued Tuesday.

The disruption is scheduled to continue through Friday.

The announcement comes after Senate Majority Leader Kenneth Gittens issued a press release, lamenting the unfinished maintenance projects at Rivera. “We have heard of the issues, and we have seen the projects in phases, but they have not been completed, making the campus unsafe and not conducive to learning,” Gittens said in the statement. “This increases our health and safety concerns in addition to the lack of proper cleaning. There is insufficient ventilation in some of the classrooms that contribute to the presence of mold.”
