In celebration of U.S. Virgin Islands-Puerto Rico Friendship Day, The Forum will present Plena Libre, the multi-Grammy Award-nominated ensemble, at Prior-Jollek Hall on the Antilles School campus on Saturday.
Known for their unique blend of traditional Plena and Bomba rhythms with Afro-Caribbean influences and modern jazz, Plena Libre promises an electrifying evening of music and dance. Since its founding in 1994, Plena Libre has revitalized the indigenous musical traditions of Puerto Rico, bringing the deeply rooted sounds of Plena and Bomba to the global stage. With a career spanning nearly three decades, the group has been nominated for multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy awards. Their music, filled with irresistible energy and soulful melodies, celebrates both the old and the new—preserving cultural heritage while embracing contemporary influences.
Led by Luisga Núñez on bass, Plena Libre’s members are masters of their craft. Emanuel Santana, a dynamic singer and guïro player, adds his vibrant vocals to the mix, while Victor Vélez plays the trumpet with skillful precision, weaving jazz-inspired sounds through traditional beats. Together, they create a musical experience that transcends borders and generations, inviting listeners to move to the infectious rhythms of their Afro-Puerto Rican heritage.
