USVI's Aliyah Boston selected No. 1 Pick in WNBA Draft by Indiana Fever

NEW YORK, USA- On Monday, April 10, 2023, the 2023 WNBA Draft got underway as expected with the Indiana Fever selecting 21-year-old Aliyah Boston out of South Carolina as the No. 1 overall pick.

The 6’5” Boston of St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (USVI) played college basketball for the South Carolina Gamecocks of the Southeastern Conference. She plays the power forward and center positions.

This marks the first time the Fever have secured the top choice in the draft, adding the three-time AP All-American to their roster.

‘I was really nervous’- Boston

Boston, who also earned the Player of the Year title as a junior, is set to strengthen Indiana's post position. The team had a disappointing season last year, recording the worst league performance with a 5-31 record.

"I was really nervous just because it was something that I'd been working toward for quite a long time," Boston said Tuesday, April 11, 2023, on "Good Morning America." "When I heard my name called, it was like a weight had been lifted off my shoulder."

Boston, 21, is entering the WNBA having already won an NCAA title and Naismith national player of the year award.

She said her hope for the next step in her career is to "win a lot of games and just be successful."
