USVI’s Garcia has short day in marathon

U.S. Virgin Islands long-distance runner Eduardo “Eddie” Garcia had been looking forward to running in his first Olympics.

But Garcia’s time at the Paris Games came to an early end Saturday, as he had to drop out just a few miles into the men’s marathon with a leg injury. “It’s been a lot to process,” Garcia said in a telephone interview with The Daily News after the race. “

The 31-year-old Garcia — whose father, Francisco Garcia Sr., is from St. Croix — developed problems with his left leg during his workouts last week. According to Garcia, an MRI showed a partial tear in the conjoin tendon of his left hamstring — an injury he first developed in 2016 while on the University of Florida’s track team.
