Traffic stop nets man’s arrest on illegal gun, ammunition charge

CHARLOTTE AMALIE — A man was charged with illegal gun and ammunition possession after a traffic stop in St. Thomas on Sunday.

Tyre Porter was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, and possession of an unlicensed firearm within 1,000 feet of a school, park, or playground, the Virgin Islands Police Department said. The suspect was also cited for three traffic violations: operating an unregistered vehicle, operating an uninsured vehicle and running a red light.

According to Superior Court court documents, Porter was arrested on Sunday morning after police saw two vehicles run the red light at the intersection of Veteran’s Drive and Gasvaerks Gade. One of the vehicles — a green Ford Escape being driven by Porter — pulled over after officers initiated a traffic stop.
