ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- While some have been describing the continued deadly military attack on Gaza by Israel as genocide, the United Kingdom’s (UK) view is that the situation cannot be described as genocide unless determined by a court.
This is according to Governor of the [British] Virgin Islands Daniel Pruce.
Genocide is an internationally recognised crime where acts are committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.
Israel launched a military campaign to destroy Hamas in response to the group's cross-border attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and 253 others were taken hostage.
More than 34,480 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry.
Governor Pruce said the UK Foreign Secretary has been clear too many civilians have been killed and the need to see Israel take greater care to avoid harming civilians and destroying homes.
